Emily Braden is coming home for the holidays. The Boise-born singer moved to Victoria in 2002 in order to study with jazz pianist and vocalist Louise Rose. Between her first gig at Hermann’s with Rose and the recording of her 2008 CD “Soul Walk” in New York, where she now resides, Braden developed a Victoria fan base as diverse as her repertoire. The Victoria Symphony is delighted to bring Emily Braden back to Vancouver Island for A Sentimental Christmas. Victoria performances are December 9 and 10 at 8pm, with matinee December 11 at 2pm, at The Royal Theatre, 805 Broughton Street. Additional performances take place December 8 at 7:30pm at the Cowichan Theatre in Duncan, and December 12 at 7:30pm at the Civic Centre in Qualicum Beach.
.
A Sentimental Christmas features straight up classics and straight ahead jazz. The Victoria Symphony, conducted by Brian Jackson, performs a program of holiday favourites including White Christmas and Carol of the Bells, and Emily Braden joins the orchestra to swing through an Ella Fitzgerald Christmas songbook.
Braden and her band have been performing throughout New York City for the past three years, but this will be Braden’s first appearance with a full orchestra, and she is thrilled to come “home” to Victoria for this amazing opportunity. “Victoria is a place of many firsts for me”, she says. “It’s where I composed my first song and performed my first gig. And now that I live in Harlem, Victoria is a place where I can retreat and recharge, surrounded by a big community of friends.”
Tickets for A Sentimental Christmas start at $33 and are available from the Victoria Symphony Box Office at 250-385-6515.
