Victoria Symphony Concertmaster Terence Tam Performs Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto

Thursday, March 24th, 2011

Victoria, BC – On March 26 & 27 at the Royal Theatre, the Victoria Symphony Concertmaster Terence Tam performs Tchaikovsky’s illustrious Violin Concerto. Conducted by Maestro Alain Trudel, the concert also marks the world premiere of composer Rodney Sharman’s “Romantic Ideals” as well as a performance of Beethoven’s inventive “Eroica” Symphony.

The Victoria Symphony’s own Concertmaster Terence Tam takes the stage at the Royal Theatre to perform Tchaikovsky’s notoriously challenging and breathtaking violin concerto. One of Tchaikovsky’s most esteemed and widely performed pieces, the violin concerto has seen a steady growth of popularity from its inception, and today is a piece beloved by soloists and audiences alike. Considered to be among the most technically difficult pieces for violin, Tchaikovsky’s concerto incorporates passages of increasing brilliance and density with dazzling emotion and energy to create a transcendent work.

Terence Tam was appointed Concertmaster of the Victoria Symphony in 2007, and performs frequently as a recitalist and chamber musician across the globe. He has appeared as a soloist with orchestras in Europe, Australia, and across North America, and his performances have been regularly broadcast on Canadian and Australian national radio and television.. He studied at the Glenn Gould School of Music Toronto, where he was a double major with full scholarships in piano and violin, followed by studies in the US and Europe. http://www.terencetam.ca

The evening also features the world premiere of “Romantic Ideals” by Vancouver composer Rodney Sharman. The piece was composed by Sharman specifically to complement the accompanying works by Tchaikovsky and Beethoven, and alludes to the Romantic era of music while highlighting Sharman’s 20th-century influences.

The concert closes out with Beethoven’s “Eroica” Symphony. Originally intended to be a dedication to Napoleon Buonaparte, Eroica is arguably one of the most eloquent and analyzed works in musical history.

Also featured on Sunday, March 27 is a performance of music written by young, Victoria-based composers. Members of the education program vsNew work over six months with VS musicians and composers to create, refine, and rehearse their pieces. The impressive products of this workshop will be showcased beginning at 1 pm in the West lobby of the Royal Theatre.
